RMLA

The Ramapo Munsee Land Alliance (RMLA) is a 501 ©(3) nonprofit organization formed in 2021 under the guidance of the Ramapough Lenape Nation and Principal Chief Dwaine Perry.  We are the first Indigenous Land Trust in the state of New Jersey, with incorporation in both New York and New Jersey, and duly registered with appropriate offices in each state.

Our focus is distinct from RMI’s broader mission.  While RMI is the long-standing non profit arm of the Ramapough Lenape Nation, RMLA exists specifically to reclaim and safeguard the Tribe’s sacred ancestral homelands, revitalizing traditional stewardship practices in the modern era.

  • In partnership with The Land Conservancy of New Jersey, RMLA successfully acquired 54 acres of sacred land known as Split Rock Mountain.
  • This monumental achievement restored Indigenous stewardship and reaffirmed our community’s dedication to preserving ancestral territories.
  • The process was labor-intensive, with founding board members and volunteers pushing forward despite health setbacks and limited resources.
  • A celebratory event at Split Rock Mountain brought together supporters, community members and the press to honor our accomplishments and share our vision with a wider audience.

Leadership Changes (2023-2024):

  • RMLA’s previous president became ill, causing a temporary organizational setback.
  • At the recommendation of The Land Conservancy of New Jersey, RMLA took a bold step to hire its first Executive Director to strengthen the organization’s foundation and ensure continued momentum.

Hiring RMLA’s First Executive Director (May 2024):

  • In May 2024, Madeline E. Betancourt became RMLA’s inaugural Executive Director, bringing extensive expertise in legal, compliance, entity formation, governance, nonprofit management, finance and grant writing; all supported by an engaging leadership style that naturally fosters strong relationships.
  • Under this leadership, RMLA has developed an exceptional operational foundation, implementing robust internal systems (including CRMs, compliance platforms and fundraising tools) while introducing comprehensive financial policies, codes of conduct and board training.  She has also cultivated key funder relationships and assembled an extraordinary Board of Directors, positioning the organization for sustained growth and impact.
